Our trained sweeps protect the working area, use equipment suited to the flue and appliance, remove soot and ordinary deposits, and leave the fireplace area clean. If we see signs of a blockage, excessive deposits or another concern while working, we will explain what we have found and advise you on an appropriate next step during the appointment.
What Is Included In A Chimney Sweep
- A discussion about the appliance, fuel and any problems you have noticed.
- Protection around the fireplace or stove before work begins.
- Access to the flue and removal of appropriate internal components where this forms part of the agreed sweeping work.
- Manual or rotary power sweeping, selected to suit the flue and its condition.
- Removal of loosened soot and debris using professional containment and vacuum equipment.
- A smoke test as part of the completed sweep.
- Reassembly of components removed as part of the agreed work.
- A Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps sweeping certificate confirming that the work has been completed.

A routine sweep is not the same as a structural chimney survey, appliance service or CCTV inspection. It cannot confirm the hidden condition of every part of the chimney or guarantee that the complete installation complies with current requirements. If closer investigation is needed, we may recommend a CCTV chimney survey or an appropriately qualified specialist.
Chimneys And Flues We Sweep
We work with chimney and flue arrangements in homes and suitable commercial properties, including pubs, restaurants and colleges. These are generally domestic-style fireplaces and stoves installed in a commercial setting. We do not service large commercial or industrial chimney systems such as those used by hospitals or crematoriums.
The fireplaces, appliances and flues we work with include:
- Open fires and traditional fireplaces.
- Wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.
- Inglenook fireplaces and many flues in period properties.
- Aga cooker flues. Kitchen Aga cookers must be serviced separately by an Aga service specialist.
- Gas-appliance and boiler flues, subject to the appliance and access requirements.
Please tell us the appliance type when booking. We do not service gas appliances or boilers. All gas appliances must be serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and some must also be disconnected by one before we can sweep the flue. Other gas-appliance designs allow the flue to be swept without disconnection. We will explain what needs to be arranged for your appliance.
We can also service suitable wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves. This is a separate service and must be booked in advance.

How Often Should A Chimney Be Swept?
HETAS recommends having a chimney swept at least once a year, depending on the appliance and fuel. Some chimneys need more frequent sweeping because of the fuel used, the amount the appliance is used, the manufacturer’s instructions or the condition of the flue.
The appropriate sweeping schedule depends on the fuel, appliance, use and condition of the flue. Your sweep can discuss this with you at the appointment once they have seen the installation and what is removed from the chimney. You should also follow relevant appliance instructions and check the terms of your home insurance rather than assuming that one interval applies to every property.

Regular sweeping helps to:
- Remove soot, combustible deposits, nesting material, debris and other blockages from the flue.
- Reduce the risk of carbon monoxide entering the property because combustion gases cannot escape through a blocked flue.

Book sooner if smoke enters the room, the appliance draws poorly, you notice an unusual smell or debris falls into the fireplace. Stop using the appliance and seek appropriate advice if you suspect a blockage, chimney fire or carbon monoxide problem.
What To Expect On The Day
- Do not use the appliance or fireplace for 24 hours before the appointment so that it and the flue are completely cold.
- Remove ornaments and fragile items from the immediate working area and provide clear access to the fireplace or stove.
- Your sweep will assess the accessible arrangement, protect the room and contain the fireplace opening.
- The flue will be swept with a suitable system while loosened material is contained and removed.
- A smoke test will be carried out, the area will be cleaned, any components removed for access will be replaced, and the findings will be explained.
A routine appointment for one flue typically takes 20 to 40 minutes. The time depends on the access and what is found within the chimney, so some appointments take longer.

Will chimney sweeping make a mess?
The fireplace or appliance opening is contained and professional vacuum equipment is used to control soot and debris. Although no chimney sweep should promise that no particle can ever escape, the process is designed to protect the room and leave the working area clean.
Do I need a CCTV survey as well?
Not for every routine sweep. A CCTV survey may be recommended if there are signs of damage, a suspected obstruction, an installation concern or a question that cannot be answered through normal accessible checks.
Does a sweeping certificate prove the chimney is safe?
Yes. A Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps sweeping certificate is issued only when the chimney is safe to use. If it is unsafe, we issue a warning notice. Always read any advisory notes on the certificate.
Can you service my stove at the same appointment?
Yes. We can service a suitable stove during the same visit, but stove servicing is a separate service and must be booked in advance so that enough time is allocated for both the sweep and the service.
